The Beauty of Mizuhiki

Mizuhiki is more than just a form of knotting colored cords, it is known as a representation of connection, tradition, and artistry. If you have some free time, why not take a small step further and experience it for yourself? Seek out a Mizuhiki workshop in your community, gather the colorful paper cords, and let the knots guide you through a memorable experience.

The materials used for creating Mizuhiki are simple, paper cords in various colors, yet, the possibilities are endless. The process involves folding, twisting and tying the cords to form beautiful and meaningful knots. Everyone can make one and only accessory that only you can make. It is also very popular as a gift idea from Japan to a friend or family.

Here we present some documentation of some Mizuhiki workshops offered by some organizers including a local kimono shop “Bankan” and a student group of Hokuriku Gakuin University in Kanazawa City. Japanese version news about this event can be found in this page.

World Picture Book Story-time in Tamagawa Library

Tamagawa Children’s Library was demolished and reconstructed in these 3 years. On April 17th, the new building reopened again, finally. Last Saturday, our member participated in becoming a volunteer in the event “World Picture Book Storytime”.

There were 2 books introduced in the event, entitled Parkit (Si Raja Burung yang Cerdik), written by Imam Kr. Moncol and Nyanyian Princess Samiya, written by Hikmat Sudjana and Nur Cililia. As a native Indonesian, sister Dian read the picture books to the guest kids and a library staff gave translational sentences in Japanese every one or two sentences.

In addition, we also introduced other Indonesian culture including Indonesian style “rock-paper-scissor”, some simple Indonesian vocabularies, and also mini performance of Angklung, a traditional music instrument from Indonesia. We played a simple song “Kira-kira boshi” which is the Japanese version of Twinkle-twinkle Little Star.
